For community transport organisations, the right vehicle makes a real difference to the people you support. And if you’re based in Scotland, there’s now a great opportunity to make that vehicle electric. Transport Scotland has confirmed £4 million for the 2026/27 round of the Plugged-In Communities Grant Fund, run by Energy Saving Trust. For eligible groups, it can cover the full cost of an electric minibus, MPV, car or van, plus accessibility adaptations and a charge point.
Here’s what the fund offers, who can apply and how PHVC can help.
What is the Plugged-In Communities Grant Fund?
The fund launched in 2021 to help community transport operators switch to zero-emission vehicles. Since then, it has helped organisations across Scotland bring 118 zero-emission vehicles into service, according to Transport Scotland.
This year’s round is the biggest yet. It also now includes MPVs and cars as well as minibuses.
How much funding is available?
- Up to £75,000 per vehicle, covering 100% of the cost (excluding VAT, unless you can’t reclaim it)
- Up to £95,000 per vehicle once accessibility adaptations and one charge point are included
- No match funding required
Funding is given on a first come, first served basis, so it pays to start early.
Who can apply?
To be eligible, your organisation needs to:
- Be a recognised community transport organisation or operator in Scotland with a UK bank account
- Provide services that meet the Community Transport Association’s definition of community transport
- Have been operating for at least 12 months (newer groups may be considered case by case)
- Meet public subsidy rules
Successful applicants also report quarterly on mileage, journeys and passengers.
What you’ll need to apply
The most important document is a vehicle quote on the supplier’s headed paper. It must show a delivery date before 12 March 2027.
You’ll also need separate quotes for any accessibility adaptations, plus a charge point quote from an approved installer and proof that you own the site or have permission to install. Energy Saving Trust is running online drop-in sessions until November 2026 if you have questions.
Grant details can change, so please check the full eligibility criteria and terms on the Energy Saving Trust website before you apply.
Choosing the right electric minibus
Think about how many passengers you carry, how many are wheelchair users, your typical daily mileage and where the vehicle will park and charge overnight.
Our fully electric range runs from 9 to 16 seats:
- EV16 Ford eTransit Minibus (16 seats): our flagship electric minibus, with up to 196 miles of range (WLTP, with the optional 89 kWh battery, pre-conversion). It can also be driven on a standard B licence, subject to conditions.
- EVWAV2 (up to 15 seats): can accommodate 2 wheelchair users due to the flexibility of removable seats
- EVCompact Ford eTransit Minibus (up to 12 seats): ideal for smaller groups with customisable accessibility
- Ford eTourneo, Ford Transit Custom Kombi and Vauxhall Vivaro Life Electric (9 seats): smaller options with flexible seating
Vehicles can also be configured as wheelchair accessible minibuses, with flexible seating, wheelchair restraint systems, step options and internal or external lifts. And because the fund accepts second-hand vehicles from a reputable supplier, it’s worth asking us about used options too.
How PHVC can help
At PHVC, we’ve supplied minibuses for over 35 years, working with schools, businesses and care and community organisations across the UK, including Variety, the Children’s Charity, which has added the EV16 to its fleet. We can help you build a strong application with:
- Grant-ready quotes on headed paper, with delivery dates
- Advice on vehicle, seating and accessibility specifications
- A clear view of purchase and leasing options
Try the EV16 before you apply
Not sure if electric will work for your service? Eligible organisations can book a free one-week demo of the EV16 electric minibus, so your drivers and passengers can try it day to day.
